14 Surprising Musical Samples

Two-Djs-mixing-music-on-t-002

You probably don’t even realise that a lot of songs that you listen to are sampling an other artist’s song. I openly admit to being guilty of this.

I have selected a few examples of sampling that blew my mind, and also threw in some more obvious ones, just for listening purposes.

1. Drake – Ill Take of You // Samples Gil Scott- Heron & Jaimes XX

This is number one on my list, as I was completely clueless. Some of you will want to hit me for this, but until my friend informed me I thought this was 100& Drake. How wrong was I?! I love both these songs equally and it is a great tribute to the ridiculously talented jazz musician Gil Scott. Thank you Drake for opening my blind eyes to a good entertainer!

2. Justin Timberlake – Suit and Tie  // Samples  Sho’ Nuff by  Sly, Slick and Wicked & Show You How by Jay Z

Here is me thinking that JT came back and had completely revamped his style, and found himself musically. A brilliant song, influenced by two great tracks – on a play back the song is more an ode to its predecessors.

3. Lethal Bizzle – Police On My Back // Samples Police on My Back by The Clash

This is more a remix with a few added lyrics and a rap, none the less I am a fan of both songs and who knew The Clash could be made urban?

4. Simply Red- Sunrise // Samples  I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)

I discovered Hall & Oates while debating in the office – I thought I had never heard of them before – in fact I knew all their songs, but thought it was Simply Red. I can see my easily made mistake here – Simply Red like to Sample the legendary duo! They aren’t the only ones to have sampled the boys – the list is very long!

5. Backstreet Boys – I want it that way //  Samples True by Spandau Ballet

My dreams are being shattered here- Backstreet Boys didn’t write all their music, and they borrowed hooks and riffs galore? Oh well, they sounded good and I love a bit of Spandau Ballet, so you can’t balme them for using the hook and riff from True.

6.Tom Jones and Mousse T- Sex Bomb //  Sample of  All American Girls by Sister Sledge

I love Tom Jones, and I love Sex Bomb, but I am team Sister Sledge here.

7. Kendrick Lemar feat Drake Poetic Justice //  Samples Any Time, Any Place by Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson was one of my favourites growing up, so it is no surprise that I am such a huge lover of Poetic Justice, the only thing I find shocking about this sample is that I didn’t realise it was Janet before hand!

8. Avicii – Levels // Somethings Got A Hold On Me by Etta James

Avicii has successfully made Etta James the vocals on a great dance track, who knew she would work so well in such diverse genres!?

9. Jason Derulo  feat 2 Chainz – Talk Dirty // Samples Hermertico by Balkan Beat Box

Good old Jason for putting Balkan Beat Box onto the map – just listening to both songs makes me want to dance. Definitely a good sampling choice from Mr Derulo – it earned him his most successful single to date.

10. Beyonce – Grown Woman //  Samples Ain’t No Fun (If The Homies Can’t Have None) by Snoop Dog  feat Nate Dogg, Kurupt and Warren G

I love the new Beyonce more than anything, and the fact that she used an amazing sample has made me happier because I can include her in my list – enjoy!

11. Miley Cyrus – We Can’t Stop // Samples  La Di Da Di by Doug E Fresh and Slick Rick (1985)

So the original of this song was made before my time, maybe that’s why I cannot see any resemblance here. I will leave this one to you to see where the similarities lie…

12. Katy Perry – ET // Samples Where In The World (Can My Lover Be) by Midge Williams and her Jazz Jesters

This is another I have to listen closely to and am still finding the main sample being used, I have to admit I can hear small influences if I concentrate.

13. Robbie Williams – Rock DJ // Samples  It’s Ecstasy When You Lay Down Next To Me by Barry White, &  Can I Kick It? By A Tribe Called Quest

This sample was a shocker for me, who ever thought they could put Barry and Robbie in the same sentence? Well now you can, and it works so well.

14. Chris Brown – She Ain’t You // Samples Human Nature by Michael Jackson

I am finishing off with Chris Brown. I love both versions of this song, but I really do feel this is more a tribute and cover as opposed to just a good old sample.
