Eventim Spotlights spoke with Saul “Flip” White Jr about his career so far, his love of the game and his advice for up and coming sport fanatics.
The world famous Harlem Globetrotters, featuring some of the greatest athletes and entertainers on the planet, will bring their one-of-a-kind family show back to the UK in April 2015 for a spectacular nine-game tour.
With a star-studded roster featuring Big Easy Lofton, Ant Atkinson, Hi-Lite Bruton, Thunder Law, Bull Bullard, Firefly Fisher and Moose Weekes – plus female stars TNT Maddox, T-Time Brawner and Sweet J Ekworomadu – the Globetrotters’ amazing show is unrivalled in the world of family entertainment.
With incredible ball handling wizardry, rim-rattling dunks, trick shots, hilarious comedy and unequalled fan interaction, this must-see event is guaranteed to entertain the whole family. After the game, Globetrotter stars will sign autographs and take photos with fans.
The Globetrotters will face a great challenge, as the infamous Washington Generals are more determined than ever to match the franchise’s historic last victory over the Globetrotters nearly a half century ago.
How did you become one of The Harlem Globetrotters?
I was playing an All Stars game in Vegas and The Globetrotters saw me, and wanted me to come on out. And here I am, sitting here and talking to you!
What were your first impressions when joining the team?
I wasn’t really sure to be honest with you. I’d never really seen The Globetrotters play growing up. I’d heard of them. I didn’t really know what to expect, I knew they were known for tricks and entertainment of that nature, but my first day and my first game ever was at the Staples Centre with the The Globetrotters. Right there I knew I was getting myself into something that was very special.
What is the most rewarding thing about being part of The Harlem Globetrotters?
The most rewarding thing about being a Harlem Globetrotter is you get to entertain people and create positive memories, all across the world.
If you weren’t playing basketball, what career do you think you would have embarked upon?
I’d have probably been a model! I’m so handsome I probably would have took up modelling! [Laughing]
I love the game so much that you know I grew up playing sports and I love interacting with kids. I would love to be a coach, doing something with our youth. Something with the game of basketball. This is where my heart is, this is what I’ve been doing my whole life. Even now I individually train kids, I like to teach the youth about the game. That’s what I love.
Is touring the UK totally different to touring back home in the US?
Flip: No absolutely not! One thing about The Harlem Globetrotters is that people are always excited to see us. Just as much as we like to tour the US we love to tour the UK.
Me personally, the UK is like a second home to me. I love coming here! I’ve been here x amount of times, and coming back here next year as well. We love entertaining, and creating these positive memories everywhere, all over the world.
Do you have a favourite city in the UK?
It’s a blessing for me to see the things that I’ve been blessed to see in my life. It’s a beautiful thing and I just take it all in.
What would your advice be to budding sporting superstars?
My advice to any young kid that plays the game – it doesn’t have to be basketball, it doesn’t even have to be a sport; it can just be anything in life. You have to believe in yourself. Your mum, your dad, your aunt, your uncle could believe in you, or your friends, but it has to start with You. Because you’re the one that has to take on a task head first.
Don’t let anyone ever tell you that you can’t accomplish or you can’t do something that your heart, or your dreams or your mind is set on doing. And wherever you go in life, you have to give it 110 percent, to be successful at it.
Any words for our readers and for people coming to the show? What can they expect next April?
OK next April when The Harlem Globetrotters come to town, expect some high flying, some great dribbling, some long shots and wholesome family fun! A game lasts four quarters, but these memories last a lifetime.
