Felix Hagan and the Family are a seven-piece beast made of makeup, hairspray and rock and roll. They fuse punk, rock, pop and musical theatre into a seamless, high-energy blend of genres, all held together by masterful musicianship and an outrageous desire to entertain.
You’re very glittery. Who and/or what inspires you style wise?
The glitter thing came from wanting to make a visual impact on stage without needing a) a load of money b) a load of prep (we are lazy and poor). Glitter is cheap and mostly comes in tiny handy boxes, and instantly sort of transforms anyone into a better, mythical version of themselves. We do, however, apologise to every dressing room we’ve ever been in. There is no getting rid of the stuff.
Our style inspirations are early glam rock and the ludicrous pageantry of over the top musicals (we all have theatre-y backgrounds) – we want to make our shows as loud to look at as they are to listen to.
What’s the best way to cheer someone up?
What musical moment or song would you like to be remembered for?
Bohemian Rhapsody. We think it’s taken.
What’s the best advice you’ve ever heard?
Don’t practice until you can play it right, practice until you can’t play it wrong.
What has been your favourite venue to play?
It’s a toss up between Edinburgh Usher Hall and London’s The Hawley Arrms. One is a sleek, beautiful, historic building that inspires awe and weeping in all who gaze upon it. The other is a sweaty, cramped Camden noise-pit that will forever have our hearts. We want to see them fight.
Who would your fantasy band line-up be made up from (Musicians/performers past and present allowed)?
Freddie Mercury, Bowie, Lemmy, Amanda Palmer, Alan Rickman, Victoria Wood. Damn you 2016.
Your best moment on stage. Ever?
The first time we had enough audience members for Felix to FINALLY do a crowdsurf (approx 9 people)
What’s the closest Felix Hagan & the Family have come to splitting up?
That crowdsurf. Those poor 9 people never saw it coming.
Which of your songs gets the best crowd reaction?
Kiss the Misfits, probably – and THANK GOODNESS it’s available to buy now from our Bandcamp – https://felixhagan.bandcamp.com/album/kiss-the-misfits
What does the future hold for Felix Hagan & the Family?
We’re bringing out a brand new album early next year – and possibly we’re biased, but it’s going to be really great. We’re also in the midst of planning a new tour – glitter-free dressing rooms across the nations, beware. If you’d like to know more about us, we’re on the twitterz at @felixhfamily, and on Facebook at /felixhaganmusic
To mark the end of their UK tour with Frank Turner, Felix Hagan and the Family will play a special one-night-only headline show at the Camden Assembly on Thursday 15th Dec. Get your tickets here!
