Have you ever daydreamed about what name you would pick if you were in a band? We all have (and we’re sure the names you picked are about as ridiculous as ours have been) and we’ve also wondered where the names of our favourite artists came from…

Bring Me The Horizon

Sheffield rockers Bring Me The Horizon have a certain Captain Jack Sparrow to thank for their moniker. According to an interview with lead singer Oliver Sykes back in 2010, the band’s name is an adaptation of one of Johnny Depp’s rum-drinking buccaneer’s lines: “Bring me that horizon”.

Elizabeth Woolridge Grant has had a number of stage names in the past including Sparkle Jump Rope Queen and May Jailer! However she decided that she wanted a name that reminded her of the seaside et voila, Lana Del Rey was born!

They’ve just been confirmed as performers at the BRIT Awards 2016 and will be embarking upon the ‘A Head Full of Dreams Tour’ in the summer, but WHY Coldplay? Chris Martin and co were originally called Starfish but apparently took the name Coldplay from another band who didn’t want it anymore!

Aussie rockers 5 Seconds of Summer can thank their guitarist Michael Clifford for coming up with their name. While at school the boys were trying to choose a name when Clifford sent over a text suggesting 5 Seconds of Summer, and that, as they say, was that!

Slim Shady’s real name is Marshall Matthers and rumour has it that he wanted his stage name to be ‘M and M’, but decided to rewrite it as Eminem. Which means there’s less chance of confusion him for a peanut/chocolate snack…

Little Mix

Created for the eighth series of The X Factor (thank you Simon Cowell!), Little Mix were originally called Rhythmix, but soon discovered that there was a musical charity with the same name. To save any confusion the girls, along with their mentor Tulisa, agreed on Little Mix!

The Lip Sync Battle’s real name is James Todd Smith. So naturally he chose the name LL Cool J as it stands for ‘Ladies Love Cool James’.
