To celebrate An Evening with Jane Fonda, we’ve chosen just a few of her most iconic moments. The fascinating woman has had an incredible career, spanning over 55 years (so far). Whilst she has played extensively broad roles as an actress, she’s made history as a fitness guru and waves as a political activist. We know it’ll be a night to remember.
9 to 5
The 1980s comedy, 9 to 5, themes are more than just skin deep. The film commentates on the issues of sexism in the workplace in the 1980s. Fonda stars alongside Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin, whilst the three women seek revenge on their sexist, egotistical boss. Fonda has been an avid campaigner for Women’s rights both before the film and throughout her life. 9 to 5 highlights just some of the issues women faced at the time.
One of Fonda’s most iconic roles as an actress was playing the astronaut Barbarella. The film is set in year 40,000, where the space travelling babe lands on planet Lythion. Barbarella sets out to find renowned scientist Durand Durand in the City of Night, Sogo, where a new sin is invented every hour. The film acquired a cult following – she seriously turned heads, making her known as a seductive 60s icon.
Controversial Visit to Hanoi
She gained the nickname Hanoi Jane after a visit to Vietnam during the war. Where photos emerged of Fonda sitting on an anti-aircraft gun, which was used to target American planes. Many were outraged at the photos, but Fonda claims she was ignorant to the way the photos could insinuate she was trying to shoot down US planes.
She has since expressed her regret for these photos, and stated that she believes she was set up to look anti-American. Although not regarded as her finest moment it made her famous as a political activist.
Jane Fonda’s Workout was the highest selling home video of the time. she released 23 workout videos and sold over 17 million copies. The aerobic videos revolutionised the home workout, which led to many people buying VCR, just so they could use her workout videos.
On November 2nd 1970 Fonda was arrested at Cleveland Airport, accused of drug smuggling. At the time she was allegedly under surveillance from the FBI – and the pills she was supposedly smuggling were actually non-prescription vitamins. However, during her arrest she scuffled with the police. So, after her release from the drugs charge she was arrested again because she allegedly kicked a policeman.
